On the sheltered forest floor the air is still, it is very humid and the temperature almost always stays the same. In the darkness, only shade-tolerant plants survive. Because of the dampness, plant and animal material decay fast. The shallow root systems of the plants take up the nutrients quickly.
Animals of this layer include: scorpions, chevrotains, tapirs, leopards and ants.
